4 Ways Your Diet Is Hurting Your Sex Life

When it comes to a fulfilling and enjoyable sex life, many factors come into play. We often think about emotional connection, communication, and physical health, but one aspect that often goes unnoticed is also our diet. Yes, what you eat can significantly impact your sexual well-being too! The saying "you are what you eat" holds true not only for your physical health but also for your intimate experiences. In this article, holistic health nutritionist Anushka Bhoj  tells us about some dietary habits (you might actually be guilty of!) that can be hurting your sex life, and how to overcome them.

  1. You’re eating too much… processed food!

Ultra-processed foods are the silent culprits behind energy crashes and mood swings. Having an unhealthy diet consisting of fast food, high salt and sugary treats might taste like heaven but they are also the same culprit that can leave you plummeting to earth faster than a meteor. These foods often lack essential nutrients and can dim your bedroom sizzles as they reduce energy levels, create hormonal imbalances, and even decrease libido!

To make matters worse, eating excess amounts of it can cause inflammation that may impair genital blood flow — say, your arteries are clogged — it can actually stall blood circulation to your penis/clitoris, paving the way for erectile dysfunction (ED) and lack of arousal. Yikes.

It's important to note that not all processed foods are inherently bad, and the term "processed" can refer to a wide range of foods with varying levels of nutritional quality. It's about making healthier choices within the realm of processed foods. Opting for whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats can contribute to better overall health, including a healthier sex life.

Strive to compose around 80% of your daily food intake with wholesome and nutritious options. This leaves the remaining 20% available for occasions when you might indulge in treats like pizza during a date night or savour a glass of wine.

  1. Jacked up on coffee

Looking to get busy under the sheets all night long? Sipping a couple of cups of java daily can bring some perks, but going overboard might stir up trouble in the bedroom for some. Caffeine affects folks uniquely, and some are simply more sensitive than others. Having excessive coffee consumption can mess with your sleep patterns, leaving you more tired than frisky. Plus, too much caffeine can make you feel jittery and anxious, which isn't exactly the mood-setter you're looking for.

Our bodies are quite the complex playground of sensations and reactions. When you're feeling all tense and wound up, it's like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded. So, if you're planning a rendezvous, consider laying off that fourth cup of coffee and replace it with some electrolytes* to keep you feeling nice and refreshed!

*Although electrolytes alone won't directly boost energy levels, they play a vital role in supporting the body's energy production and utilization. Additionally, they aid in maintaining hydration, especially during moments of increased activity and perspiration, such as when you're getting intimate with your partner.

  1. Knocking back too much alcohol

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, which means it can dampen brain activity and slow down neurotransmitter function. This can lead to changes in mood and behavior. Some people may become more emotional, experiencing heightened sensitivity, sadness, or even aggression. On the other hand, others might feel more relaxed and carefree. However, excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to depressive feelings and exacerbate existing emotional issues.

Remember, moderation is the name of the game! Liquor might give your confidence a peppy boost at the beginning of the night, but if you overstay your welcome at the booze buffet, your sexy time might turn into a snooze fest. And your brain? Well, it could end up throwing a raging party or crying in its drink. Not to mention, having a whiskey Dick - yep, it's a thing. When you've had a few too many, it can be challenging for your buddy downstairs to rise to the occasion. Blame it on alcohol's ability to mess with your blood flow and hormones.

So, if you want to avoid a wild emotional rollercoaster and keep your bedroom antics on point. Cheers, but with a dash of caution.

  1. Eating (way) more than you need

Loading your plate with an excess of food can result in reduced performance during intimate moments. It not only adds to weight gain but also sets the stage for a notable decline in energy levels. After all, who would feel like cuddling when all that's on your mind is a nap?

If you happen to indulge in excessive eating, particularly of carbs and sugar, you might experience a crash that leaves you feeling lethargic and inclined to just lounge around or snooze. Beyond the general sluggishness caused by overeating, opting for refined carbs (think white bread and sugary cereal) can lead to a rapid surge in your blood sugar levels. In response, your body ramps up its insulin production, intensifying your feelings of fatigue.

Here’s a big tip! Try adopting a more frequent eating pattern throughout your day instead of devouring a massive dinner. Rather than going for three hefty meals, aim for four or five smaller ones featuring ample protein and carbs that digest more slowly, enriched with fiber. Think of options like oats, quinoa, and vegetables – they're the real heroes here.

For an extra dose of awesomeness in your life and an upgrade to your bedroom game, here are three more must-know factors to bear in mind to keep your overall well-being in check:

🌱 Maintain a Healthy Gut 🌸

Did you know a healthy gut contributes to a thriving sex life? A balanced gut microbiome supports hormonal balance, nutrient absorption, and immune function – all essential factors for overall vitality and sexual wellness. Another alarming factor is that inflammation of the gut can disrupt the production of serotonin, consequently affecting the sex drive. That is why nurturing your gut health through a diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and prebiotics helps sustain a harmonious bodily environment, fostering energy, mood, and physical well-being that can positively impact your intimate experiences.

Medications, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and stress can disrupt gut health, potentially triggering an array of bacterial infections that could impact your sexual well-being. Boost your gut health with foods rich in probiotics & prebiotics like kefir, kombucha, kimchi, miso & tempeh.

😫 Reduce Stress 😓

Life's a rollercoaster, but your libido shouldn't be taking the same ride. Stress often sneaks in & crashes the party, leaving your desires stranded at the door. Between work, life, and everything in between, it's time to reclaim the passion that stress tried to steal.

Unleash the power of self-care. Transform your sanctuary into a temple of relaxation with soothing bubble baths, calming playlist, or a gentle massage session with your partner. During these moments of relaxation, consciously avoid the use of screens, recognizing that our inclination to check emails or messages can inadvertently introduce stress. Remind yourself & your partner that your love den is a stress-free zone, ready for romance!

🏃‍♀️ Stay Active 🏋️‍♀️

It's not just about sculpted muscles and a fit physique. Regular exercise amps up cardiovascular fitness and stamina, and cranks up your mood and confidence levels, igniting the potential for steamy encounters. So, by staying active, you're setting the stage for a more steamier intimate connection.

Pick a physical activity that gets your heart racing – whether it's dancing, jogging, lifting weights, or even indulging in a little twerking action. Get sweaty so it leaves you primed to conquer not only the world but also the passionate depths of your lover's heart.

Think of your diet as the playlist for your intimate escapades—it's the appetizing prelude to some seriously steamy action. From the kitchen to the bedroom (or wherever the magic happens), relish the flavours of life and love like a true connoisseur. Get ready to turn up the heat on both your plate and your passions!
